The well protected hill of Matzen was already in the Bronze Age a residential place. The Roman "Masciacum" was built to secure the Roman road in the Inn valley.
Castel Matzen is located in the municipality of Reit im Alpbachtal - the Kufstein district in the state of Tyrol, Austria - located in the Alpbachtal valley, and was mentioned for the first time around 1167. Up to the year 1468, the facility was owned by the knights Ritter von Freundsberg. Afterwards the castle repeatedly changed hands. 1468 Matthias Türndl bought Matzen. Short term it came into possession of the Ross family until 1521 and passed then into the possession of the Fieger. This gave Matzen its present form.

In the era of the Rococo around 1684 Johann Ferdinand Yrsch bought the castle, who sold it in 1734 to Joseph Ruppert of Pfeiffersberg. 1776 the Pfeiffersberg family was put under guardianship by the state government. Under the ownership of the Pfeiffersberg family Matzen burned down and became a ruin.
Until 1957 Schloss Matzen was owned by Captain Tom Michael Baillie Grohman, who used the palace as a summer residence until it was sold to the Austria-born American architect Ernst Kump. 2008, it was finally taken over by the current owners and with a lot of effort completely renovated.
Castel Matzen is made up of a north and south wind, both elongated, a short connection wing and a round, Romanesque donjon in the east. In the inner courtyard, you can admire Arcadias with a groined vault with round octagonal marble columns of the 16th century, on four different floors. The entrance hall is furnished with a beamed ceiling, this is also where in 1968 a late Gothic paintings of tendrils and coats of arms, dating back to 1500, were laid open. In 1873, renovations on behalf of the Irish Fanny Reade of Mount Heaton-Grohmann, an enthusiastic Tyrol devotee, were carried out. In the cours of these works the living areas have been equipped with panellings and inventory of Tyrol and Oberösterreich.
