In 930 AD the village of Wattens was first mentioned, but already in pre-Roman times this area was settled.
The emblem of the municipality shows two symbols: the globus cruciger which was the watermark of the ancient paper mill, and the silver stone that reminds on the importance of the crystal industry for the village.
A huge economic boost came up when the glass cutter Daniel Swarovski of Bohemia settled down in this area. In 1895 he founded the crystal company Swarovski. Moreover there are several interesting places in the municipal area, e.g. the Typewriter Museum. In the Rhaetian settlement “Himmelreich” you can admire the foundations of constructions of the Rhaetian period. Equally impressive, is the paper mill of the year 1559, the most ancient paper mill of North Tyrol.
