Petite France is a historic quarter of the city of Strasbourg in eastern France (Alsace).
Interestingly, the name Petite-France ("Little France") comes from the "hospice of the syphilitic" (Hospice des Vérolés, in French), which was built in the late 15th century on this island, to cure persons with syphilis, then called Franzosenkrankheit ("French disease") in German. In the Middle Ages this part of Strasbourg, was home to the city's tanners, millers, fishermen and prostitutes. Today Petite France is one of Strasbourg's main tourist attractions with many hotels, pubs and cafeterias.
